The pecking order would probably continue with Hollywood’s Power Brokers — high-level agents.
Legendary talent agent Lew Wasserman set the stage when he negotiated Jimmy Stewart a guaranteed percentage of the returns of his 1950 movies Harvey and Winchester '73. And during the 1980s, we were all in awe as Michael Ovitz launched Creative Artist Agency’s amazing rise to power as they repeatedly secured coveted “first-dollar gross” deals for many of their clients.
Sadly, to screenwriters around the globe, we live in a cult of celebrity culture where Star Power always seems to trump the Power of the Storyteller, leaving the screenwriter at the bottom of the food chain. That is, hopefully, changing, with strides made by the WGA and smart writers taking it upon themselves to multi-hyphenate themselves into greater power positions.
